Stories of Hope: Lion-Hearted Fighter Beats the Odds

Presently, the medical world is buzzing with cord blood cell or stem cell transplant success stories! For its multiple set of benefits, the blood from the umbilical cord gets acclaimed as a regenerative medicine which helps to repair tissues and cells. Today, regenerative medicine is considered to be an essential subject in medical science which will have the key to cure irreversible diseases. The blood from the umbilical cord comprises of a rich source of stem cells that is helpful in this treatment. There are several clinical trials that have been phased to research on the application of cord blood stem cells to chronic ailments and their possible treatments.

The present records state that there are more than 80 diseases that are treatable using cord blood stem cells. It has been shown to treat:

  • Cancers
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Blood related diseases
  • Immunological ailments

However, nothing encourages more to the seekers of stem cell transplant other than the success stories about fighters of fatal diseases, who combated it all with faith, hope, courage and by selecting the right stem cell bank.

Success Story 1

Erik Haines had been detected with Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy, which is also known as Krabbe disease at the age of 2. This followed when after the sad demise of his brother who was suffering from a similar condition. However, doctors were able to treat this condition with the usage of cord blood stem cells. Erik’s situation wasn’t as critical as his brother, which made the doctors take a call on an early treatment.

Though a cord blood stem cell transplant was the ideal choice for Eric, doctors weren’t able to locate any acceptable donors of bone marrow. During his time cord blood cell transplants was a new medical feat and needed an exact bone marrow match. However, finally the doctors could find a match in a bank in New York and the process was completed. After this Eric was admitted in the University Of Minnesota Hospital for a span of 26 days. After that the doctors declared that he is treated well and his disease had already shown signs of healing in a remarkable way. Erik is leading a healthy and happy life today post the treatment.

Success Story 2

This story is about Anthony Dones, who got diagnosed with osteoporosis, when he was at a tender age of 4, which made his bones brittle and caused them to break. To heal this issue when he was just a baby stem cell therapy was the only medically viable choice. His doctors went ahead with the treatment process first by searching at the cord blood banks to search for a matching donor.

As a couple of weeks passed by, the doctors chanced upon a suitable match and then Anthony got hospitalized back in December 2002. For 8 days he was given chemotherapy to minimize the percentage of harmful body cells. Post that the transplant took place. Anthony after the transplant had to stay in the hospital for close to 2 months. Next year 2003, during the last half of January Anthony’s blood cell levels got completely stabilized and he was then discharged from the hospital.

Today, Anthony is leading a normal life happily with this family and his family. The best part is Anthony’s family had stored his cord blood with a private bank during his birth. However, the cord blood cell that was donated when his transplant was taking place was more efficient. However, Anthony’s family also came up with the decision to have his stored cord blood donated to a clinical research team that is studying the impact of stem cells on osteoporosis.

All these success stories about courageous individuals who decided to fight their ailment with cord blood transplant gives hope and also the motivation to opt in for cord blood banking and donation.

Useful Home Treatments for Constipation

Constipation is a condition of the digestive system where someone experiences tough bowel movements which happen less frequent than normal. Everyone has experienced constipation at some point in their life, and they can attest that it is not a very pleasant experience. Though it is not chronic, everyone would give anything to get their bowels back on track. The amount of time between bowel movements varies widely from one person to another.

Most people have them three times in a day while others have them twice or even once! However going for more than three days is enough to cause alarm. This is because food takes longer in the digestive tract which means the colon absorbs more water from the stool. This makes the stool hard and dry and therefore difficult and even very painful to eliminate.

Causes of Constipation

1. Low Amounts of Fiber in the Diet

Fibers act as cleaners to the digestive tract. Diets that lack fibers result in an unclean digestive tract. This, consequently, results in accumulation of food particles and wastes that block the passage and thus cause constipation

2. Physical Inactivity

People who are physically inactive, for example, those who are bedridden for several weeks, are more susceptible to constipation. This is because physical activity helps us maintain a high metabolism, and thus body processes such as digestion happen more rapidly.

3. Some Drugs

Some of the drugs that cause constipation include

Antacids that contain aluminium such as Basaljel
Diuretics such as chlorothiazide
Antidepressants such as imipramine
Narcotic pain relievers such as hydromorphone

4. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

People who suffer from this condition suffer from constipation more frequently

5. Aging

As we grow older, our metabolic rate slows down. This results in a reduced rate in body functions such as digestion and thus cause constipation

6 Not Drinking Enough Water

This results in more absorption of water from the food which makes the stool hard. The result is constipation

7. Not Emptying Your Bowels when Needed

Ignoring this vital call of nature means the stool spends more time in the colon. As a result more water is absorbed from it leaving it hard and dry.

The Remedies for Constipation

1. Add Fiber-Rich Foods to Your Diet

The main role of fiber in our body is cleaning the digestive tract. They clean up the system by scrubbing off food leftovers and waste particles and even soaking up the water, thereby treating and preventing constipation. Some of these foods include cereals, almonds, beans, barley, vegetables, and fresh fruits, among many others. You should also drink plenty of water

2. Mint or Ginger Tea

Research has proven mint and ginger to be handy home remedies to digestive problems. Methanol that is contained in peppermint has an antispasmodic effect which helps relax the digestive system’s muscles and thereby allow rapid movement of food. Ginger, on the other hand, helps the digestive tract generate more heat thereby speeding up digestion through increased metabolism as heat increases the metabolic rate.

3. Healthy Facts

Oils from avocados, nuts and olive oil help in lubrication of the digestive tract and hence ease constipation.

4. Lemon Water

Citric acid present in lemon juice helps stimulate the digestive system and also flush out harmful substances such as wastes. Taking a glass of fresh lemon juice every morning or adding lemon to your tea will not only help treat and prevent constipation but also make you drink more water everyday.

5. Coffee

Coffee is a good stimulant to your body. It works by increasing metabolism through heat and thereby speeding up your trips to the toilet. Other hot drinks work just as well.

6. Raisins

Other than being rich in fiber, raisins contain tartaric acid which helps loosen stools. Research shows that people who take raisins have their food go through their digestive track in half the time it takes people who don’t. When should you call your doctor? If you experience sudden constipation that is accompanied by belly pains, cramping, or you are not able to pass stools or gas, call your doctor immediately.

7. Water

Taking a cup of water after waking up is recommended. Water helps in peristalsis and therefore helps prevent constipation.

8. Massage

Massaging the abdomen also helps in relieving constipation. It achieves this by stimulating intestinal muscles that are involved during bowel movements.

9. Taking Honey

Honey is a natural laxative. Taking a cup of honey water will help loosen stools and hence prevent and even relieve constipation.

10. Using a Sitting Stool

Using a stool to sit on during defecation helps you adopt a squatting position which helps open up the colon more and helps achieve an easier and more effective elimination of stools.

Baby Teeth Vs. Permanent Teeth

Whether you have kids or not, everyone goes from having baby teeth (or primary teeth) to getting adult ones. It can be easy to think that baby chompers are just smaller, temporary versions of permanent teeth. While both tooth kinds are made of the same material and are structured in a similar way, there are noticeable (an unnoticeable, but equally significant) differences. Ultimately, because of these differences, baby and permanent teeth should be cared for in certain ways.

Baby Teeth: More Than Small Teeth

Young children will have up to 20 baby teeth instead of the 32 adults have. Adults have an additional four third molars (wisdom teeth), four first bicuspids and four second bicuspids. Baby chompers, like the rest of the baby’s or young child’s body is delicate and fragile. Contrary to the belief that the enamel (or outer layer) of the tooth is the toughest material of the body, the enamel of a baby’s tooth is not as tough because it is still developing. As primary teeth eventually fall out to make room for the permanent ones, the enamel can’t develop as fully as that found on permanent ones.

Because baby chompers aren’t as strong, they are more prone to breaks, chipping and discoloration from acids found in tooth staining foods and drinks. This makes the them more susceptible to cavities. With the enamel being so thin in places, it is more difficult for fillings and bonding to be applied should a tooth chip or fracture. Children who clench or grind their teeth will have more noticeable wear and tear due to the extra softness of their teeth.

Both baby and permanent teeth have a pulp located in their center. This where the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth are located. The ligaments that help hold the tooth in place can also be found around the pulp. While the pulp in adult, permanent teeth are small compared to the rest of the tooth, the pulp found in baby teeth are much larger. This mean that it doesn’t take as much for the nerves of a tooth to become inflamed and infected. The risk of nerve death is also higher in primary teeth than in permanent one.

The appearance of primary teeth are also different than that of permanent ones. Besides being smaller, they also have a different color and shape. Baby teeth are much whiter than adult teeth, even permanent teeth that have been whitened. Adult teeth naturally have a more yellow hue to them. The color differentiation can be seen when children lose their baby teeth and their permanent teeth begin coming in. Primary teeth have flat, smoother edges due to their recent eruption from below the gumline. Adult teeth have jagged edges that are also rounded. Baby teeth more often have a square look, looking like boxes. The larger, flatter surfaces of baby teeth mean there is more surface of contact between surrounding teeth.

Finally, the most obvious and well-known difference between adult and baby teeth is that permanent teeth can’t be replaced with another natural tooth like a baby tooth can. While baby teeth fall out on their own and are replaced by permanent teeth growing up underneath them, there is no such replenishing of lost or decayed teeth.

Benefits of Using a Hydrogen Water Bottle

A hydrogen water bottle is a fast and efficient solution to transform everyday tap water into healthy drinking water. It is a very practical self-contained bottle that is useful for taking fluids on the go. A regular drink of this infused water benefits the health in many different ways. For instance, it has the potential to increase body micro circulation and gives your metabolism a boost.

However, the water bottle isn’t able to purify the water, so it is helpful to start with water that already has a low mineralization count to protect not only your health, but also the machine. Also, the hydrogen water is only practical for personal hydration. It is not a useful option to use for cooking purposes because the hydrogen will quickly evaporate when the water is boiled. This means the beneficial antioxidant properties are lost.

Let’s take a look a few of the most pleasing benefits of using a hydrogen water bottle:

Quick and efficient: They are very quick and efficient with the ability to turn everyday water into hydrogen water in about 3 to 5 minutes. The healthy water is ready to drink as soon as the infusing cycle is complete.

Long-lasting: once the infusing is complete, the water is able to hold its antioxidant properties for a period of about five or six hours. It has the potential to last longer if stored in a hermetically sealed glass container. In the event of the water losing its hydrogen, it is acceptable to go through the hydrogenation process again. This will not have a negative impact on the water and will not result in saturation.

Keeps you hydrated: this type of water bottle is a great way to stay hydrated while traveling. It is beneficial to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day. Also, it helps to drink this water on its own and not with food. The hydrogen water is less effective when drunk at a mealtime because of the digestive process.

Easy to maintain: the electrodes in these machines have the potential to last five years or more, which means minimal investment on maintenance. They don’t rely on filters or other components that have a very short lifespan. However, it is important to only use low mineralization water to prolong the usable life of the electrodes.

Enjoy Life With Dental Implants

Despite advancements in dental treatment, a large number of Americans suffer tooth loss — largely as a result of tooth decay, gum disease, or trauma. In the past, the only treatment options available for individuals with missing teeth were dentures and bridges. However, now, dental implants are readily available.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a titanium root that is surgically placed in the jaw bones. Once in place, the titanium surface bonds to the jaw bone. A titanium post called an abutment, goes from the implant through the gum and act as the tooth part. Implants offer a solid foundation for fixed or removable replacement teeth. They can support crowns and bridges. They also stabilize fixed and removable dentures.

What Are the benefits of implants?

Implants offer an improved look, as they have a profile and emergence similar to natural teeth. They preserve adjacent natural teeth as there is no need to trim a healthy tooth to place a bridge crown. As the implant surface bonds to bone, it provides solid foundation for replacement teeth. Dentures stabilized with implants are secure and have a better fit than conventional removable dentures. Implants function like teeth, letting you eat your favorite food with confidence. They improve the overall quality of life. With immediate implant placement, you can have an implant placed in a fresh extraction socket without having to wait for months for the bone to heal. This technique usually results in better esthetic outcome, especially when front teeth are involved.

Who is a candid to dental implants?

To receive an implant, you must have healthy gums and adequate amount of bone to support and stabilize the implant. You must have an overall good health. If you do not have enough bone at the implant site, a bone graft can be placed to augment the area. A bone graft can even be placed in the sinus to augment surgical sites for replacement of upper molar teeth. You must also commit to keeping your dental implants healthy with meticulous hygiene and regular dental visits. Implants can develop gum disease as natural teeth.

How expensive are implants?

Implants are usually more expensive than conventional crowns and bridges. Most insurance plans do not cover implant treatment. However, considering the benefits of implants, they are a better investment than conventional methods of tooth replacement. They also have a higher success rate than conventional bridges.

Eucalyptus Oil Therapeutic Uses

Eucalyptus essential oil is a natural oil that comes from the Eucalyptus tree. This essential oil has many uses including therapeutic uses. Eucalyptus oil is used in many ways to help the body and mind. It also has practical uses.

One of the practical issues of Eucalyptus oil is for cleaning. Did you know Eucalyptus essential oil helps to get rid of mold? It does. Put a few drops on a cloth and wipe the place that has mold. No more mold! You may also make a cleaning solution to clean mold and other parts of the house such as bath tubs, counter tops and sinks. Mix a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil with 1/4 cup water and a couple of tablespoons of baking soda. This makes a nice, non-toxic cleaning solution.

A very common therapeutic use for Eucalyptus oil is to help with respiratory problems. If you have allergies, a bad cold or sinus issues which cause you to have trouble breathing Eucalyptus essential oil can help. You can add a few drops of Eucalyptus oil to a bowl of hot water. Put your head over the bowl. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the Eucalyptus aroma. This will help your nasal cavity to open up and you will be able to breathe better. Many times an infection causes the nasal cavity to swell which is why there is trouble with breathing. Eucalyptus oil has healing properties that can reduce swelling in the nasal passage.

If you have a bad cold or need mucus in the lungs to break up you may wish to use a lotion or salve with Eucalyptus oil in it. Rub it on your nose and chest to improve breathing. You can make your own emergency therapeutic lotion by using an unscented lotion found at the store and adding a few drops of Eucalyptus oil. Mix together and apply to your chest. This lotion also works well for healing dry skin. Never apply essential oil directly to the skin. Never drink or ingest it directly.

Another common use of Eucalyptus essential oil is in bath salt or soap to help reduce pain in the muscles and joints. If you have Fibromalgia, Arthiritis or a pulled muscle, relaxing in a bath with Eucalyptus oil can help those muscles to feel better. You may wish to use a little Eucalyptus bath salt or Eucalyptus bath oil in your bath. This helps your mind to relax as well as your joints and muscles. Many times tense or strained muscles are the reason why your body is in pain. Eucalyptus essential oil has a strong smell so you don’t need to use much.

Does Going to the Dentist Make You Nervous?

I am writing this article based on my personal experience. I’ve always had issues with going to the dentist and as a result, would only go when I HAD to. After getting into the nutrition game and using one of my products, I found out that I don’t have to be nervous or avoid the dentist.

Let me tell you a story about having to have some teeth pulled out a couple of years ago. Before going to the dentist I took six glasses – yes, SIX glass of my calcium and magnesium product. I hope this doesn’t sound like I’m promoting my product because my whole purpose here is to enlighten you and if you’re one of those people who can’t go or stress like crazy when having to go to the dentist, there is a solution.

I got to the dentist, who happens to be a friend of mine who gives out single packets to his patients, and went through the start-up routine – checking my teeth, isolating what needed to be done and setting me up for it.

After opening my mouth and his assistant checking everything, I was sitting there for several minutes and then she got me to open my mouth for the injection. I didn’t feel anything at all and was happy about that.

They then started fiddling in my mouth and doing the dentist thing. After about 10 minutes or so I managed to ask when they were going to actually pull the teeth.

To my surprise he said it was already done. I couldn’t believe it. The injection, the teeth being pulled and all the additional things they do and I did NOT feel a thing and I was pretty relaxed.

I really wish I could have had that when I was a kid. Dentist visits were always traumatic and not my favorite pastime. I have subsequently had a few others tell me how it helped them to get over their dental treatment.

Here’s one from a trucker. “Here a while back, Desiree and I were talking and I mentioned to her I was going to the dentist and that I had to have a tooth filled and crown put on one of my teeth. She said I should drink two glasses of the calmag (calcium and magnesium) and that it would help. I didn’t put a lot of attention on it but I thought it wouldn’t hurt. So, that day I drank a glass in the morning then a couple of hours later another two.

“So, I went to the dentist and I was very relaxed. Normally, I’m a bit tense from holding my mouth open and it’s kind of not like I’m fighting the dentist but I’m not very comfortable. I noticed that it was a lot easier to hold my mouth open while he worked on the tooth.

“After the dental work was done, I went back home and the Novocaine started wearing off and I noticed that my jaw – the area around my jaw where he worked on my tooth – wasn’t sore because normally it would be sore and it would ache from having to hold my mouth open in an awkward position. I didn’t have any of that and I was not uncomfortable.

“It just felt as if I hadn’t had the dental work done. The only way I could tell that I’d had it done was that my gum-line was a bit sore, which is normal, from him working on the tooth but I could not believe the difference it made not having those tense jaw muscles. I was really surprised. It was almost unbelievable but it worked really great.

Another thing, I felt so good I did my exercise routine that day. I normally wouldn’t do my exercises after having dental work done like that.”

I really want to let people know they can have dental work done painlessly and stress-free.

Basically, calcium gluconate is the most potent painkiller and is completely natural and relaxes the muscles via the nerves.
