Obesity and the Its Cost on the HealthCare Systems

This article will relate the current obesity problem in America with the increasing costs for weight related diseases on healthcare while also comparing it to the health issues caused by tobacco, which is usually much easier for people to relate to. The following research will show approximately how much money is being spent towards these conditions and who is carrying the most of the burden in costs. There also have been suggested options that are meant to intervene and help improve the persons life but not without improving financially.

According to recent trends, obesity among adults in America has increased 45% in the past ten years. This has been a consequence of the ever decreasing monetary cost of calorie dense foods as well as an increase in the reluctance to engage in physical inactivity (Finkelstein). Health risks associated with excessive weight gain begin when the persons’ body mass index, or BMI, reaches 25. At this point the individual is considered overweight until the BMI reaches 30 then the individual becomes classified as obese. Along with a 30 or above in BMI, a persons’ health becomes at risk with many more conditions due to their obesity. These conditions include hypertension (high blood pressure), osteoarthritis, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol), Type-2 diabetes and even cause strokes heart disease and certain cancers. In 2000, what has become known as “poor diet and physical inactivity,” caused 365,000 deaths, making it the second leading “actual cause” of death in the United States with tobacco coming in first with 435,000 deaths.

With the significant increase in obesity the economic consequences have vastly increased as well. Medical costs associated with overweight and obesity may involve direct and indirect costs. Direct medical costs may include preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services related to obesity. Indirect costs relate to morbidity and mortality costs. Morbidity costs are defined as the value of income lost from decreased productivity, restricted activity, absenteeism, and bed days. Mortality costs are the value of future income lost by premature death (Overweight and Obesity, 2008).

Most Americans accept the fact that tobacco is responsible for a tremendous percentage of healthcare expenditures. In the late 1990’s into the early 2000’s tobacco was responsible for $75 billion in direct medical costs annually. With two thirds of Americans overweight many are still uninformed that obesity contributed to $47.5 billion in direct medical expenditures in 1998 according to the National Health Accounts (NHA) study (Overweight and Obesity, 2008). To date, medical costs for overweight and obesity is now over $90 billion a year. Roughly 9% of aggregate medical spending goes to treating obesity related diseases. As a result, health insurance premiums and social security taxes have increased, and health care is rationed. Although Medicare and Medicaid pay approximately half of obesity-attributable money, each taxpayer is now responsible for a payment of approximately $180 a year for obesity related medical costs for public sector health plans. These advances have reduced the personal cost of healthcare but have in turn placed the burden on employers and the government (Finkelstein).

In order to set the country straight on the medical issues at hand, economists have concluded that there are no effective options regarding the reduction of the obesity rate in America without reducing the total medical costs as well. Research has shown that a number of obese personalities exist as well as a number of interventions for each. The common factor each has shown is that none of these appear to work without the appropriate financial involvement. A decrease in overall marginal cost will most likely bring about a change in certain behaviors of Americans, appropriately being eating habits and exercising. Although the U.S. health insurance’s stand on obesity is that ultimately, it is not their problem.

Hip Replacement Surgery – Risks And Recovery

Hip Replacement Surgery is a surgical procedure, which is performed on the hip joints to substitute painful joints with the artificial joints. The procedure is compulsory for the patients, who are not getting any relief from the oral medication and are in need of the surgery to get rid of the pain. It can be performed either hemi-replacement or total replacement form that totally depends on the condition of the patient. The treatment is much complicated and requires proper medication and strict bed rest to give your joints the relief they want.

A number of risks including blood clotting, infections, fracture, change in leg length, etc. are associated with it, but they get cured with the time. To get relief from the surgery or to recover faster, you need to take some precautions even after getting discharged from the hospital and they are:

Say No To Stair Climbing: One of the main things that help you in the fast recovery of the hip replacement surgery is not climbing the stairs till you recover properly. Make sure where you stay at your home has all the arrangements on the same floor, so, you don’t need to do up and down over and over again. It’ll help you recover faster than before.

Cut The Clutter Out Of Your Room To Avoid Falls: Another precaution that patients must take after the hip replacement surgery is not falling over and over again, as it may put the unnecessary constraint on your muscles and affect the stitches as well. Thus, you should try to keep your room as clean as possible.

Use An Elevated Washroom: Until you get recover properly, you should not perform any exercise that includes bending, as it put pressure on the joints and damage them drastically. Even while going the washroom, try to use the elevated washroom, so, you don’t need to bend too far.

These are a few quick recovery tips that the patient should follow even after getting the discharge. Apart from the above tips, try to sit on a firm chair that keeps your back straight. It’ll help you avoid bending and take care of your joints. The use of recliner is a big no for the patients who just went for the hip replacement surgery until they get recover properly and get permission from the doctor. If you have any doubt regarding the risks associated with the conditions or want more recovery tips, you can freely ask them all to your surgeons.

Study Shows Reduction in Memory Declines by Blocking Spike in Stem Cell Growth After a Brain Injury

There are about 2 million Americans who suffer from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) annually. The severity of the trauma may differ from patient to patient but leads to a wide range of motor, behavioral, cognitive as well as intellectual disabilities in the patients. These disabilities may be long term or short term. TBI is a global health concern and despite the huge number of injuries, the treatment options are limited.

There have been many treatments and studies that suggested excessive burst of new brain cells after TBI helped in the recovery of the patients better. Breaking this common assumption, Dr. Viji Santhakurmar (Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience, Rutgers University) and her colleagues proved otherwise with their report. They challenged this assumption and found that an excessive neurogenesis may, in fact, lead to memory decline, seizures.

Neurogenesis aftera a Brain Injury May Lead to Memory Decline, Seizures

It has been proposed that increase in neurogenesis aids in the repair of the injured brain network. However, survivors of a traumatic brain injury often develop life-changing disorders such as a decrease in memory as well as epileptic seizures.

Researchers found there was a considerate increase in the new nerve cell growth (neurogenesis) that was probably to help replace the damaged or destroyed brain cells. However, Santhakumar and her colleagues found evidence contradictory to the popular belief. They found the spike in brain cell growth may, in fact, lead to post-injury seizures and long-term memory decline.

This team from Reuters University examined brain injuries in lab rats and found that brain cells at the injury site play an important role. These cells double in number within 3 days after injury; however, they decrease by more than half after a month as compared to rats with no brain injury. The neural stem cells develop into mature cells too showed a similar increase and decrease pattern. Thus, proving they were responsible for the loss of brain cells.

As quoted by Professor Viji Santhakumar in a press release, “There is an initial increase in birth of new neurons after a brain injury but within weeks, there is a dramatic decrease in the normal rate at which neurons are born, depleting brain cells that under normal circumstances should be there to replace damaged cells and repair the brain’s network. The excess new neurons lead to epileptic seizures and could contribute to cognitive decline. It is normal for the birth of new neurons to decline as we age. But what we found in our study was that after a head injury the decline seems to be more rapid.”

According to the study, post-injury changes in the development of new cells along with the neural precursor cell proliferation led to a long-term decline in the neurogenic capacity. When the post-injury neurogenesis was reduced early on resulted in dentate excitability and seizure susceptibility.

To achieve this goal of slowing down nerve cell growth after injury, researchers used anti-cancer drugs that are under clinical trials currently. These drugs are known to block the growth and survival of new nerve cells. The drugs were able to stop the rapid proliferation of the nerve cells and prevented the long-term decline in brain cells that lead to memory decline in lab rats. It also showed the rats had reduced risk of seizures after administration of these drugs.

Spider Vein Treatment Cost May Surprise You – Here’s Why

Have you ever wondered how much a medical procedure cost before you actually got a bill for it? This type of transparency is hard to actually find, and for those interested in something like spider vein removal cost, having a little bit of insight about the kind of hit their bank account will take would be nice to know.

Spider vein treatment is important to mention because it falls into a bit of a unique middle ground that’s vastly different from other procedures. Spider veins aren’t usually seen as a serious condition, so it’s relatively rare that there’d be a need to get rid of them for a medical reason. Usually, patients dealing with spider veins elect to get rid of them because they are embarrassed by how they look. The drawback? Now the cost of the procedure becomes part of the healthcare billing craziness we all can’t stand.

It doesn’t seem fair to think that you should be in the dark about how you are billed. This is most certainly the case when you will be billed in vastly different ways based on the way your procedure is coded in the hospital billing department. Regardless of the reason for removing your spider veins, you should at least have a basic understanding what treatment may cost you.

You will need to keep in mind the following:

  • No two patient costs will be the same
  • Multiple treatment sessions to may be needed for your desired results
  • Your health insurance may dictate whether a procedure takes place

Depending on the severity of spider veins, the cost to remove them will be very different between patients. Different removal methods will cost different prices, and you may need a few sessions to get the results you want.

Perhaps the biggest thing to know about spider vein treatment cost is whether your current health insurance will cover the procedure(s). For the most part, spider and varicose veins are often seen by physicians as cosmetic issues, with a small percentage that can be indicative of something more serious. Because of the rather low risk associated with them, removal of these veins is thought to be more on par with an elective cosmetic procedure. Insurance companies usually don’t cover these types of procedures.

As a consumer, you have rights about the information you’re privy to, so get to know the ins and out of your insurance policy, and have someone really give you a thorough rundown of what you’ve got covered. It goes without saying, but be sure to do this prior to any procedure taking place.

The best way to know where you stand on spider vein removal is by getting a good once-over by physician. When all is said and done, the number at the bottom of your invoice may not be favorable, but compared to that of spider vein treatment cost, you might be saving some serious dough. Don’t compromise your health based on your bill.

Ideal Governance – Care providing organization should have effective system and governance for checking care’s quality as well as safety. Their primary objective should be to improve their service and reduce health risks.

Complaint Department – There should be a system through which a person can submit a complaint about the treatment or care. The provider/organization must install this facility for managing complaints and thoroughly investigate it. Also, a firm must take proper actions after identifying the problem.

Healthy and Proper Staff – Organizations providing care should have a stern recruitment procedure. Moreover, they should perform necessary background checks like an applicant’s work history, criminal records, etc. Also, they should employ people who suit the role of a caregiver.

Display CQC Ratings – A company should present their rating in a way that an individual can see it. Displaying on website is an ideal way for everyone to notice it. Also, they should include CQC’s latest report about their service, so that everyone knows about it before hiring them.

Transparent and Open – Every care provider must be transparent and open about their services to an individual. If something wrong takes place then, they must convey to the person about what happened and provide support after apologising.

All policies and procedures of community living are based on the fundamentals which are mentioned above. It is essential for every organization to follow these for functioning adequately.

So, while going to a consultancy for social care, make sure they have a high CQC rating and also read the report on their latest services. Only after ensuring these, hire a care providing organization.
